Understanding DNS Propagation
Everything you need to know about domain name system propagation, caching, and TTL lifecycle.
What is DNS Propagation?
DNS propagation is the timeframe required for domain name server updates to disperse across all ISP resolvers worldwide. When nameservers or IP addresses are updated, worldwide servers take up to 24–48 hours to update their cached records.
The Role of TTL (Time to Live)
TTL is a numerical value (measured in seconds) dictating how long intermediate recursive resolvers are allowed to cache your DNS response before asking authoritative nameservers for a fresh answer. Lowering TTL before migrations speeds up propagation.
How to Flush DNS Cache
If your domain has propagated worldwide but your computer still connects to the previous server, flush your local OS DNS resolver cache:
ipconfig /flushdns
